About Steve Gordon

Steve Gordon is a consultant, author, and advocate whose work crosses the boundaries of business, faith, justice, and community. His written works span technology management, agrarian reform, theology, and criminal justice — a breadth that reflects a career defined not by a single lane, but by a relentless pursuit of solutions to real problems. Steve's clients benefit from a rare combination of systems-level thinking, pastoral insight, and hard-won experience in some of America's most challenging reform spaces.

Nonprofit Consulting Services

The Gordon Group works with nonprofit organizations at critical moments — when leadership needs clarity, when strategy needs to be rebuilt from the ground up, or when an organization's structures are no longer serving its mission.

Steve brings seasoned expertise in four core areas:

Board Development — Healthy organizations begin with healthy boards. Steve works with nonprofit boards to clarify roles, strengthen governance, develop leadership pipelines, and build the culture of accountability and trust that sustains long-term impact.

Strategic Planning — Strategy is not a document; it is a living commitment. Steve guides organizations through planning processes that are honest about current reality, clear about desired future, and actionable at every level of the organization.

Fundraising Strategy — Sustainable fundraising is built on relationships, clarity of mission, and a compelling case for support. Steve helps organizations develop fundraising strategies that align with their values and build the donor relationships that endure.

Organizational Assessments — Sometimes an organization needs an outside set of eyes. Steve conducts thorough assessments that surface what is working, what is not, and what needs to change — delivered with candor and care.

Business Consulting Services

The Gordon Group brings a classic systems-thinking approach to business consulting — one that sees organizations as interconnected wholes rather than isolated departments or functions. Steve works with entrepreneurs and business leaders who are serious about building something that lasts.

Systems Analysis — Every business is a system, and every system has leverage points. Steve applies rigorous analytical thinking to help business owners understand how their organization actually functions — where value is created, where it is lost, and where focused change will have the greatest impact.

Entrepreneur Coaching — Building a business is as much an interior journey as it is an external one. Steve coaches entrepreneurs through the challenges of growth, decision-making, team leadership, and the personal development that sustainable success demands. His coaching is direct, experienced, and rooted in genuine investment in the success of each client.

The Kingdom of God in the Marketplace

One of Steve Gordon's most distinctive contributions is his ongoing development of a theology of the marketplace — a serious, biblically grounded framework for understanding how the kingdom of heaven manifests in the economic and vocational life of everyday people.

This work begins with a conviction: that the marketplace is not a spiritual wilderness to be survived, but a primary arena in which the kingdom of God advances. Drawing on biblical marketplace theory and decades of observation across sectors, Steve has developed a unifying framework that helps business leaders, entrepreneurs, nonprofit executives, and community builders understand their work as inherently kingdom work.

This is not a prosperity theology or a baptism of capitalism. It is a careful and challenging call to those who work, build, buy, sell, and employ — to do so with the values, relationships, and purposes of the kingdom firmly in view. Steve develops and teaches this thinking through writing, speaking, and consulting engagements for leaders who want their faith and their work to be genuinely integrated, not merely adjacent.

Criminal Justice Reform

Steve Gordon has spent decades in the trenches of criminal justice reform in the United States — working not from the outside in, but from the ground up, in prisons, jails, courtrooms, policy chambers, and communities. His reform work spans four interconnected arenas:

Prison Reform — Steve has worked directly within correctional institutions to advocate for conditions, programming, and practices that recognize the humanity of incarcerated people and create genuine pathways toward rehabilitation and reintegration.

Policy Reform — Lasting change requires changing the rules. Steve has engaged at the policy level to challenge the systems, statutes, and institutional practices that perpetuate cycles of incarceration and undermine the possibility of justice.

Reentry Reform — The moment of release is both a threshold of hope and a minefield of obstacles. Steve's work in reentry — including his book Purposeful Neighboring — has helped shape more humane, effective, and community-centered approaches to the critical period when a returning citizen comes home.

Local Jail Reform — While much national attention focuses on prisons, local jails hold some of the most vulnerable people in the justice system — many of whom have not been convicted of anything. Steve has brought focused attention and reform efforts to the often-overlooked world of local jail conditions and practices.

Across all of this work, Steve's animating conviction is that justice — real justice — is transformative, not merely punitive. It restores. It reconciles. It rebuilds. And it is possible.
